Monitor Height Calculator

A 49-inch ultrawide and a 24-inch office monitor should not sit at the same distance. Enter your height, screen size, resolution and main task to calculate top-edge height, screen-center height, viewing range and tilt.

Height unit

Screen size is the marketed diagonal in inches.

The calculation uses seated eye height, the physical height of the selected screen format, and a distance range adjusted by resolution and task. If the result feels too close, increase text scaling before moving the screen inside the lower guardrail.

Check the result in your normal posture. If your stand cannot provide enough depth or height, compare the adjustment options in our monitor arm guide.

How this calculator works

The calculator first estimates seated eye height from standing height using a population-level anthropometric relationship. It then places the top edge between eye level and 5 cm below. Unlike a visual-angle shortcut, the screen-center result uses the selected diagonal and its actual aspect ratio: 16:9 for conventional displays, 21:9 for the listed ultrawides and 32:9 for the 49-inch super-ultrawide.

Viewing distance starts with size-specific ranges from our monitor distance guide. Resolution and task then narrow or shift the range without going below 50 cm. Coding and writing use the farther part of the range and recommend text scaling; editing and competitive gaming use a nearer portion while retaining the same lower guardrail.

Assumptions and limits

  • Seated eye height is estimated, not measured. Seat height, torso proportions and posture can change the real value.
  • Marketed screen size and a standard aspect ratio estimate panel height; bezels and unusual models can differ.
  • Comfortable vision also depends on eyesight, text size, glare and task. Increase display scaling rather than leaning forward or moving inside the lower guardrail.

Frequently asked questions

How high should my monitor be?

A common starting point is to place the top edge at seated eye level or up to about 5 cm below it. Because seated eye height varies, measure the calculator’s estimate from the floor and then fine-tune without lifting your chin or leaning forward. See our ideal monitor height guide.

Does a 4K monitor change the viewing distance?

Higher pixel density can make text and detail usable somewhat closer, but it does not remove visual-comfort or posture considerations. This calculator shifts the size-based range modestly and never recommends less than 50 cm. Adjust text scaling before moving closer.

What about dual monitors?

Keep frequently used content close to your center line. If both displays are used equally, place their inner edges together and angle them inward; if one is primary, center that screen. See the dual-monitor setup guide.
